Giving back is just good business. It allows companies the ability to support causes that are important to the communities in which they are located, the customers in which they serve, and the employees in which they hire. No matter large or small, private or government – every company can give back.
Here are five ways your company can give back to the community:
1. Combined Federal Campaign (CFC)
What: Sponsored by the United Way of the National Capital Area. This vessel allows federal employees to give back to the specific charities that matter most to them and their agency.
Why participate? CFC is celebrating 50 years of giving. Last year alone they disbursed $1,675,726 in grants throughout the community to support programs that improve health, strengthen families, and help children succeed. They helped low-to-moderate income residents receive more than $12.8 million in income tax refunds through the Earned Income Tax program. CFC provided free health screenings and follow-up care to thousands of residents. The program also saved individuals and families more than $2 million through the FamilyWize discount prescription program and helped more than 10,000 kids get moving towards a healthier future through the Fun, Fly & Fit youth fitness program. 2. Toys for Tots
What: This worthy charity is sponsored by the United States Marine Corps Reserve. It has been in existence since 1947. Starting in October of each year, new toys are collected for children whose parents cannot afford Christmas gifts.
Why participate? It is one of the easiest charitable gift giving operations to run. The Marines supply you with all the necessary materials to get you started. In 2009, they collected and gave out more than 5 million new toys to children in need. Give back here.
3. Operation Smile
What: Operation Smile is a non-profit medical services organization providing surgeries and support to children with cleft palate, cleft lip and other facial deformities. Based in Norfolk, Va., Operation Smile helps children around the world lead happy and healthy lives.
Why participate? Approximately one out of 700 children are born with facial defects. Since its inception in 1982, Operation Smile has helped 175,000 children by providing them with necessary surgeries and support services. Their website makes it very easy for companies to get involved either through sponsorship, setting up employer matching programs, and/or fundraising. Give back here.
4. Operation Homefront
What: Operation Homefront is a major non-profit organization providing a myriad of services to our military families that are in need of assistance. To date, the organization has met the needs of approximately half a million military personnel and their family members.
Why participate? The majority of Operation Homefront’s clients are family members of service members whose rank ranges between an E1-E6. These are the lowest paid members in our military and often times their salary falls well below their living expenses. Operation Homefront provides military families who may be suffering with financial hardships, death, injury, or physical or mental detriment as a result of service in Iraq and/or Afghanistan. 5. Feeding America
What: Feeding America is the nation’s largest organization leading the fight against domestic hunger. It has been rated as one of the most efficient charities with practically all of its donations going directly to Americans who struggle to put food on the table to provide a meal for their family.
Why participate? The fight to prevent hunger in the richest country in the world is a fight that needs to be won. No one in this country should have to go to bed at night hungry. America’s children are the next generation of workers. The website gives you a lot of ways you can help prevent hunger; through donations, volunteering at a local food bank, matching gift programs, collecting and delivering food and many more. One can also assist The Kids Cafe program which provides free meals and snacks to low-income children through a variety of locations such as Boys and Girls Clubs, churches, or public schools. Give back here.
These are just a few ways to easily get your company’s service efforts up and running fast. How does your company plan to give back this year?
